Lacrosse named as fifth focus sport

York Sport President Cassandra Brown has announced that Lacrosse is set to become the fifth focus sport at the University of York.

As a result of this prestigious status, the club will receive strength and conditioning training, coaching support and primary access to facilities.

As well as this they will also benefit from free Kukri training shirts, free access to guest speaker workshops and a range of personalised sessions on areas such as nutrition or psychology.

Brown said: “Myself and head of York Sport, Keith Morris found the decision making process extremely difficult due to the sheer number and high standard of applications we received. However we came to a decision based on Lacrosse’s exceptionally excellent application.

“The club met all the criteria applications and were judged on things such as BUCS points, performance, participation and community outreach.

“The fact the programme has been able to expand this year is a great and important step for performance at York and next year we will be looking to expand the programme even further to include seven sports.”

Lacrosse President Andy Chalmers was delighted with the recognition, and told Vision: “As a club we are delighted to receive the backing of YUSU and YorkSport, and we’d like to say a massive thank you for the support we’ve received.

“The benefits the club we receive through becoming a focus sport, will go a long way in helping us achieve our short, medium and long-term goals. Lacrosse has come so far in recent years here at York as well as across the country, and it is great that the university recognises that and can offer its support.”

The scheme started in 2012 with three focus sports, and has expanded since, with Rugby, Rowing, Swimming and Fencing making up the existing quartet.
