The University of York 2nds made light work of a poor Hull side to pick up their first victory of the season.
York made a strong start immediately, winning possession early on and scoring their first goal within seconds. Hull soon won the ball back, but missed their chance to equalise. In this fast-paced game, accuracy was of the essence, and it was no surprise that so Hull quickly fell behind.
Strong, accurate shooting from the star player of the match, Sam Hall, ensured that they finished the first quarter seven goals ahead, amidst several contact and obstruction fouls from Hull. Goal Attack Olivia Rainey, and the Goal Shooter, Sam Hall, worked fantastically well together and there was strong communication within the entire team.
The second quarter also began brightly for the White Rose. Again, York dominated possession, though the pace slowed and it was less dynamic than the frantic first period. Strong defending ensued from captain Emily Turpin, who was playing Goal Defence, and our Goal Keeper, Chloe Cannon. After a tense patch at the top of the court involving Turpin and some good defence from Hull, York managed to get the ball back and secure a firm lead (27 goals to 14) by the end.
The game continued after a short recess with yet another strong start from York, with more excellent finishing from Hall and a few penalties from Hull.
An injury to a Hull player delayed the start of the last quarter, and when the substitution happened the Hull team desperately tried to salvage the situation, but to no avail, because of the in-form Hall. Through continuously strong defence and not squandering possession, York were able to see out the victory.
Captain Emily Turpin, commented: “I’m so happy with how every one of the girls played today, considering we’ve only been playing together for 2 weeks it’s such a promising result and a great reflection of the effort we’ve been putting in to training.”
