The University of York Boat Club started off the year with an excellent ninth place finish for the Senior Men’s Eight at Sunday’s National Championships, to provide the club with a positive start to the season.
The eight comprising of Max Hawkins, Lloyd Hughes, David Lynas, Tom Calvert, Frank Flight, Robert Mills, Patrick Somerville-Large and Daniel Hodkinson with cox Natalie Smith recorded a fantastic time in the time trial, however only managed to qualify for the E final due to the quality of the competition, which consisted of three leander crews which competed at the Olympics.
In the E Final the squad produced an exceptional display, beating the likes of Manchester University, Oxford Brooks and Granta, to finish second in the contest, leaving them ninth in the overall standings.
Meanwhile the double comprising of Edward Van de Straaten and Stuart Hosie endured a more difficult time in their race on Saturday morning. Due to problems with the boat the double struggled to attain their desired result, despite their best results.
The next race in the calendar for both the Senior Men’s and Women’s squad is the Small Boats head on the 17th November which will see York’s top rowers compete on their home river.
