YUSU President Kallum Taylor has announced that a large number of first years who have been forced to live off campus due to the increased intake this year, will benefit from free bus travel to the University.
Taylor said: “Being placed in off-campus accommodation, when you met the deadline for the guarantee, shouldn’t become a financial burden for you. Every little bus journey adds up, day by day, over the course of a year.
“I’m delighted to say that this won’t be a problem for those of you living off campus… The 250 or so of you out there, will NOT have to pay for travel between your home at University and campus.”
Students housed at either The Boulevard or Catherine House, will be handed free travel on either the #44 Unibus or the #SB1 buses from that accommodation to both Heslington West and Heslington East.
The development, which has been secured by the University’s Travel & Transport Department, will ensure that students do not have to endure the expense of regular bus fares, an added concern for students who are already having to cope with being based off campus.
The same deal will apply to Vanbrugh students living in Fairfax House, in what Taylor has labelled “an extension of the campus hopper.
Meanwhile the University has agreed to pay for free bus passes for the #44 Unibus for all Langwith students housed in Walmgate, which is closer to the city centre than campus.
In addition to this the University will also pay for the most ‘relevant’ annual bus passes for Langwith students who are living in University Managed Houses across the city, however there is no guarantee that this will apply to all of those students.
