Through the grape vine

Due to boredom and fear I have been looking at a lot of articles that are giving tips for fresher’s and what not. So far I’ve learnt quite a lot, such as; don’t jump into a relationship with the first girl/guy you meet, have fun because first year doesn’t matter, don’t try to change yourself or try to fit in with people you really don’t like and make your room as homely as possible.

Personally I will not be jumping into a relationship with anyone! It’s scary enough to make friends let alone find a boyfriend, I’ll leave that till all my friends are getting married and I decide to panic. The people you meet at uni seem to become the friends you have for life and you want to be prepared to pick housemates for your second year! As for importance of first year, I’m actually really happy it doesn’t count because you can learn things in lectures and actually enjoy it rather than a favourite subject turning into a chore in just one year.

Fortunately these days it’s a bit hard to “re-invent” yourself because of Facebook and twitter. I’m sure my new housemates have looked on my Facebook and got a pretty good idea of what I’m about (and hopefully ’what I’m about’ isn’t too terrifying). It’s always best to just be yourself because years down the line people are going to realise how weird you really are! Like most things everyone is in the same boat, all your housemates will be just as worried as you!

My bedroom will definitely be homely! My room here in Manchester is ridiculously colourful with every inch of my walls covered in post cards, tickets, photos and posters, so I’m hoping my room in York will be as well. Some very homely things I suggest you invest in are: bunting just because it makes any room look a bit more cheerful! Photo frames to put all over your room to remind you of home (mine are overly twee), cushions so you chill on your bed in the day and be nice and cosy…from my selection of cushions you can tell I am a lover of patterns. As seen as we’re in York I’m going to be taking a big blanket and a hot water bottle, I can only imagine how cold it’s going to get!

Unfortunately I’ve heard about the accommodation nightmares a lot of other fresher’s have been having. I’m glad I got my accommodation sorted so quickly but I hope York can sort it out for all of you with no home! If it comes to the 29th and you’ve not got a home you can top and tail with me!
