Do I have to wait another month?

Since this is my first official blog post for freshers I’ll start with an introduction. I’m Robin, I live in Manchester, and I’m coming to York to study sociology! Not to come over too enthusiastic but I’m really, really excited about starting university, I can’t wait, but we’ve still got another month to go until all the excitement kicks off.

I chose to come to York for three reasons. Firstly my mum went there, secondly it’s generally amazing, and finally I wanted to go somewhere that’s a smaller city than Manchester, but not in the middle of nowhere, and York fits the bill perfectly. Thankfully I live reasonably close to York and can probably get there in an hour and a half if not less, unlike one of my house mates who I’ve managed to find, who has a mammoth four hour car journey to endure.

I’ll be part of Halifax College; now I know it’s a lot of people’s second choice accommodation, but I really loved it when I looked round (and its one of the cheapest which is always a bonus). So far I’ve found three of my future housemates, so I’m off to a good start, and I’m already getting rather over-excited, seen as we still have a month before we can move in! Sadly most of my friends here in Manchester are leaving around the 12th, so ill be left here on my own for a lonely couple of weeks!

Now accommodation is sorted I can start buying things for my room. I already have a fair amount, but I’m one of those people who likes to over-prepare, so in all likelihood I’ll be the one turning up with an overflowing car full of too much stuff. Today my bunting arrived in the post, I think that’s the thing I’m most excited about, that and fairy lights. Of course I had to have the typical pre-university trip to IKEA, this consisted of me convincing my mum to buy me very unnecessary things. For example somehow I convinced her to buy me a pretty glass bowl, because I want to feel fancy whilst I eat cereal with a hangover, my reasoning actually worked, somehow.

One thing I’m worried about is keeping my room tidy. I am probably the messiest person I know, so it’s going to be a challenge especially when I’m sharing a house with 10 other people! To be honest staying tidy should be the least of my worries; I’m yet to learn how to cook anything. I can’t even cook pasta, worrying I know. So my first week of trying to survive on my own, between consuming obscene amounts of alcohol may be tricky. But at least I’ll be having fun, right?

I’m glad I’m going to a northern university because my sister went down south and some of the words she used were lost in translation, such as ‘scran’ which means tasty food. I feel like I have a fairly posh accent (for a manc) but when I leave Manchester that doesn’t seem to be the case. I sound like a member of Oasis when I go to London! Hopefully my accent won’t be too noticeable or outlandish. However if people don’t mock me for my accent, I’ll probably manage to do something embarrassing in freshers that I’ll never hear the end of!
