Behind Bars: The Lowther

This is a staple stop on any respectable bar crawl in York because of its trebles and good music and general busy vibe.

The Lowther, whilst in its perpetual flooded state
The Lowther, whilst in its perpetual flooded state

General gist: By the time you newbies get there for Fresher’s week, I bet you a treble that the bottom floor will already be flooded as it spends half the year in that state, so you’ll have to grab a booth or a sofa upstairs- it’s situated right by the river and a couple of streets down from Dusk, Stone Roses and Willow. Perfect for any bar crawl this side of the river.

What’s the vibe: You will spend about £3.20 on a treble spirit and mixer, my favourite is vodka vimto, and sink into a comfy seat and chat drunkenly to your newfound friends. It has a nice vibe, with cute dogs on the wall paper and pink and brown furnishings, and it plays your standard York cheesy pop mixed with Top 10 hits, ready to get you in the mood for Willow.

Who goes: Pretty much everyone. It has a student discount if you get a Lowther card, which is pretty popular amongst students, and all societies from Student Media to Physics make it an essential stop before Willow.

Quote from a regular: Gary Holland, a Philosophy student said: “It’s nice, by the river. I once stole a tile from the toilet there once, I was very drunk from my many trebles.”
