In one of the more unique sports at Roses, York’s canoe polo team are aiming to continue their good run of form against Lancaster and contribute a swathe of points to the quest to recapture the Carter-James Trophy.
Last year, the experienced women’s team ran out comfortable 4-0 winners, but the loss of a few members means that another win this year is far from certain.
The open team shared the points after a 3-3 draw in 2012, but at last weekend’s BUCS championships York ran out 2-1 winners, putting them in a good position ahead of the weekend.
“We’ve just had our BUCS weekend tournament,” club president Milly Harvey told Vision. “Our women’s team placed 16th of 23, while Lancaster were 8th, so it will be a tough game. We are determined to do York proud.”
“Our open team placed 21st of 33 teams with Lancaster 23rd. Hopefully [the win against Lancaster] will put us in good stead for Roses, although we will be missing a couple of good players!”
The canoe polo matches are scheduled for early evening on Saturday, though they are held off campus at Yearsley Swimming Pool, on Haxby Road. The evening gets underway at 5pm.
The club are confident that they are doing everything possible to make sure they collect maximum points on Saturday.
“We’ve got some extra training scheduled for the next couple of weeks,” Harvey added, “and this weekend at BUCS has really shown us what we need to work on in these sessions to make them even more productive.”
