York City have sacked manager Gary Mills, after today’s 2-0 loss against Bradford saw them slump to 18th in League Two. The defeat was York’s 11th straight game without a win, and the alarming dip of form has resulted in the end of Mills’ tenure.
51 year old Mills took on the York City job in October 2010, and last year guided York to promotion back into the Football League via the playoffs, as well as victory at Wembley over Newport County to allow York to lift the FA Trophy.
A statement released by the club reads as follows: “It is with regret that the York City board of directors has terminated the contract of manager Gary Mills with immediate effect.
“The recent playing form, which has resulted in the team achieving only six points out of a possible 33, has led the board to this extremely difficult decision.
“We would like to thank Gary for his great contribution to York City and for managing last season’s promotion team. We wish Gary the very best for his future career.”
The club hopes to name a successor to Mills within the next week, as they aim to end a concerning run of form which has seen them spiral towards the foot of the table. York were pushing for the playoffs before Christmas, but after today’s defeat by League Cup Finalists Bradford, they now sit only four points above the drop zone, casting doubts over their safety in the Football League.
Late goals from James Hanson and Garry Thompson sealed the defeat, which proved to be the former Nottingham Forest player’s last game in charge of the club. Mills, who has previously managed Notts County and Tamworth, won 58 out of his 136 games in charge at Bootham Crescent, and became a popular figure with the fans.
