The draw for the 2010 College Cup Tournament has been completed and several high profile fixtures have already emerged. Halifax 1sts, widely considered as favourites to take the cup, have been drawn in a relatively easy group and will face Vanbrugh 1sts, James 2nds, Langwith 2nds and Goodricke 3rds in Group B.
Elsewhere the Goodricke 1sts will take on Wentworth 1sts along with the Derwent 2nds, Alcuin 2nds and James 3rds in Group A.
Challengers Alcuin 1sts and Derwent 1sts have been drawn against each other in what is being touted as the toughest match of the group stages. They will be joined by Vanbrugh 2nds, Wentworth 2nds and Vanbrugh 3rds in Group C.
Finally the James 1sts will take on the perennial underdogs Langwith 1sts in Group D. The group is completed by the Goodricke 2nds, Halifax 2nds and Derwent 3rds.
Of the captains in attendance at the draw Mark Lund looked most happy with his team’s fixtures telling reporters that ‘the draw worked well for us’. He added that the team were pleased to have avoided both Derwent and Alcuin 1sts and believed that the ‘Fax should ‘reach the semi-finals with ease’.
Vanbrugh co-captain Dan Hewitt was more wary of the draw: ‘we’re not happy about getting the favourites, Halifax 1sts are a team who should win this competition comfortably.’ Hewitt went on to bemoan his team’s lack of University 1sts players saying ‘we don’t have the privilege of bringing in four or five Uni players, well be coming in as underdogs’.
Miles McDermott, captain of Alcuin 1sts, remained upbeat about his team’s difficult draw stating that he had wanted to play the Derwent 1sts and ‘if it’s the opening game then that’s all the better.’
