“Mad Cap’n Tom”, ex-Pirate President of YUSU, has launched a Parliamentary campaign.
Tom Scott rose to fame when he won the tightly contested election for YUSU Presidency in the 2008/09 academic year. His campaign involved his dressing up as a pirate and being pulled around campus on his very own “pirate ship”, hailed as an inventive use of the budget spending cap.
When asked if he was serious Scott said: “I be wearing’ a duck on me head, matey, an’ be saying’ that I be fixin’ broken Britain wi’ duct tape. I suspect I not be entirely serious.”
He went on to explain: “I be runnin’ because I lost a bet…!”
Scott is standing in the Cities of London and Westminster, a constituency which has traditionally been a safe Tory seat. At the last election almost half the votes cast were for the Conservative Party, with the next largest group being Labour, with just over 25% of votes.
He of course is aware of this, commenting that “it be one o’ the safest Tory seats in th’ land, matey;” saying there’d be no chance of him winning.
Ironically, he is standing up against a member of the Pirate Party – Jack Nunn, though claims he had no idea.
“Neither of us be known’ about the other until a few days ago; I be talkin’ t’them an’ apologising’ profusely. They be havin’ a serious campaign… an’ I not be wanton’ t’ cock that up for ’em.”
His facebook group states that “Mad Cap’n Tom be th’ prospective independent Member o’ Parliament fer th’ Cities of London an’ Westminster,” and proposes a number of policies, including tax free rum, a 50% levy on Cheryl Cole MP3 downloads and all British schoolchildren ‘t’be trained in swordsmanship an’ gunnery,’ claiming that “half of ’em be known’ how t’use a knife already, this not be a stretch.”
The general election is to be held on May 6th.

This is great, but I thought Tom hated politics??
One of the safest Conservative seats in the country?
I shall happily buy the first person to claim it a drink should he get more than a hundred votes.
“Usually Reads Nouse…!” – I imagine that is why he is running dressed as a pirate then.
I claim it, Stelhan: I will bet you ten pounds that he gets more than a hundred votes.
Tom Scott: 84 Votes.
I’m liking this.
