YUSU has confirmed that it will be cutting Vision and Nouse’s grants starting from the next academic year as part of a wide range of measures to reduce Union expenditure.
Both papers funding will be cut by over 30%, high enough to confirm that a merger is “effectively set in stone”, according to one ‘senior correspondent’ at Nouse.
In an email sent to both editors at the end of last term, YUSU stated that “In line with our long term efficiency maximisation strategy, we feel that horizontal integration would enable both newspapers to share resources… this is an ideal time to promote synergy, we hope the end product will be one newspaper, that will be both bigger and stronger. Although we understand you may be disappointed with this decision, the end product will in fact have nearly 70% more funding than the you currently have now.”
The ruling has been met with unanimous disapproval from the editorial teams at both papers. All will have to run against each other in what is dubbed to be a ‘Super Election’ in order to retain their respective positions. The election would have to be called before the end of the Summer Term to give new team time to make the necessary adjustments before the funding is cut at the beginning of the upcoming Autumn Term.
Disputes have already begun between both societies as to what call the new newspaper, Nouse are proposing ‘York Nouse’, whereas York Vision are in favour of ‘Vision’ while retaining the Nouse logo of Central Hall.
There are further issues as to how resources could be combined. Vision and Nouse use PCs and Macs respectively, preventing their computers from running on the same servers.
One Editor at Vision who has chosen to remain anonymous, has said, “This is an absolute disgrace. Instead of having two excellent papers we will be left one crap one. Competition is partly why both [Vision and Nouse] win so many awards. This is so bad… I will probably defect to The Yorker.”
Disclaimer: In case anyone is still in any doubt, this was an April Fool.
I’ve heard rumours of merge between URY and YSTV in the future.
I am bloody worried about all of this.
Its called YSTURY.
Worse still, I heard they were going to merge Tim Ngwena and Lewis Bretts…
I think someone should let Tim Ngwena know that this is an April Fool’s joke. He might think you’ve somehow read his mind…
roflcopter.
I agree with Tom. The only reason I know this is an April Fool is because YUSU would never think of warning anyone about this in advance.
This really wouldnt be such a bad thing if it was true, at least the budget cuts anyway.
I heard Nouse get so much money that they spent hundreds last year on champagne at one of their parties.

Vouse? Nision?
Martin, indeed. This particular ‘joke’ may – tragically – be a little too close to the bone.
urYSTVisionOUSE . I propose a mass merger.
(ok, this is not my idea, I know.)
As someone who is massively gullible this scared me witless yesterday, again largely because it could actually happen. Thanks to those intellectual heavyweights at YUSU this has been probably the worst year for the papers since that Labour candidate who looks like a fat prairie dog was in charge. The new editors, and the editors after them, can at least console themselves by looking at the soon-to-be resurrected Bad Taste under the entertaining leadership of Bullgwena.
vouse – thats what would happen if nouse and ystv were forced to merge
