The University of York has announced it will begin streaming graduation ceremonies online. Starting with the January 2013 graduates, friends and relatives of students will be able to view their graduation ceremonies live on the University website.
The news comes after the success of similar initiatives at other universities and will no doubt be viewed by many as a positive move by the university administration. The decision will be welcome for those students whose friends and family cannot attend their graduation ceremonies, particularly in the case of the university’s international students.
The university press office said: “We have introduced live online streaming of graduation to give more people the opportunity of seeing the ceremonies. We are a university with a global reach with students from more than 100 countries. Online streaming allows family and friends of those students who cannot make it to York to see the ceremonies as they happen.”
With York’s stated goal to become a “global university”, the news could be seen to be a considerable move in the right direction.
YUSU Academic Officer, Graeme Osborn, played a key role in the decision. Speaking to Vision, Osborn said: “I am delighted that the university is live streaming graduation. I raised the issue last year as other universities have done this for a number of years and it has proved very popular in many cases. It is great news for students and especially their friends and relatives who can’t attend.”
Students seem to have responded positively, but have raised some doubts about whether the process may be unnecessarily complex or costly, with one third year student telling Vision: “Online streaming shows the university keeping up with the times. Having family and friends at ceremonies is an integral part of the graduation process, but online streaming will allow extended members and those with travel difficulties to watch it online rather than miss it completely. As long as the process is simple, cost-free and reliable, I’m all for it.”
A great idea but not one one I will take advantage of. I can’t wait to attend your graduation ceremony where I will be a very proud Dad.
PS Add a photo of you looking less grumpy lol
Great to see that you’re beginning to make a name for yourself as a scribe. Your stuff looks very promising of even better things to come. Take that as a compliment from an old cynical purveyor of the art with nearly forty years’ experience. I agree with your dad about getting a better mugshot – you look as if you’ve just fallen out of one of that laundrette mob’s tumble driers! Keep up the good work!
Parents, parents, parents. Don’t you know the number one rule of every student experience???? Parents should take a back seat during these kind of things.
You need to give the lad some space. Stop commenting on his editorial pieces, you are really cramping his style. Save the gushing for private emails between family members.
Love the idea – my missus went to Leeds, and because her folks live in Australia it was the only way they could watch the ceremony. A truly global university, indeed!
“Graduation ceremonies to be streamed online | York
Vision” was indeed a terrific read and also I actually was
indeed extremely satisfied to come across the blog post.

Online streaming will allow extended family members & friends to watch it online rather than miss out completely – Excellent, absolutely excellent.
