The York men’s lacrosse team produced a ruthless performance to destroy Durham 3rds as their promotion challenge gathered pace.
It was not a contest from start to finish as the gulf in class was clear. Meanwhile, Durham didn’t help themselves by bringing only 10 players, meaning they had no substitutes for the entire match.
In fact, one could argue the greater contest was between York’s Chris Menon and Andy Thomas who seemed to be having their own personal battle over who could score more goals.
The emphatic result means York maintain their 100 per cent league record, having won all five games, and sit three points clear of Durham 2nds at the top of the table.
What will delight captain William Chun more than anything, however, is the manner which the new fresher talents applied themselves and remained hungry until the final whistle.
York were ahead inside the first minute as the diminutive Thomas slammed home with brute force. And Thomas scored several more, along with Menon, Daniel Hall, Josh Illsey and a spectacular solo goal from Scott Nuckey as York soared to a 9-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Durham improved after the break and restricted York to a few half chances, and Menon urged his less experienced players to increase their intensity once more.
A debut goal for David Hibbin, and further goals for Menon, Illsey and Tebutt stretched York’s lead to 13-0 at half time.
The most surprising fact during the third quarter was that Durham finally registered on the score board, to the elation of their players and to ‘keeper Billy Rooks’ disgust.
York continued to score at will and the final score of 28-1 was fully deserved.
Afterwards, Chun told Vision: “We wanted to try some new things that we’ve been practising and it worked out pretty well. We have a cup game against Bangor next week – we played them a few times last year and we’re expecting a good game.
“We’ll have to up our training over the next couple of weeks for the matches ahead.”
