The York men’s first team lost 118-122 against Liverpool, making this the closest match in memory for most of the team.
After valiant performances from from Ali Cormack, Tom Jones and George Watkins, the second two of which had briefly taken up the weapon for the purposes of the match, the foil event was eventually lost 28-45 after a number of equipment failures. Special mention must go to Watkins’ cunning use of counter-attacking, as well as Cormack’s deft parrying.
In more familiar territory, Jones was able to bring York back to a more or less level standing with Liverpool after a quick victory in the sabre event, with the help of teammate and captain Bairong Huang. Both demonstrated some nifty footwork and lightning fast parry-ripostes.
The overall result of the match came down to the épée, and though the event was won by York, aggregated scores meant that despite some great fencing from Alexandre Synadino, George Watkins and a great debut performance from newcomer Brian Herling, York was not quite able to catch up in time after Liverpool’s strong start.
