Over 200 students have taken part in an attempt to break the Guinness world record for the number of simultaneous spooners on 22 Acres.
Hopes were high when over 700 people signed up to the event’s Facebook page on Thursday, but the final effort of 220 people fell well short of world record of 529.
However, the event, jointly organised by the RAG teams for James and Alcuin, did raise £85.51.
James RAG officer Dan Ashcroft, said: “Everyone had a good time and a laugh. [The amount we raised] is pretty good and it’s going to the six RAG charities which are going to be elected in the next few weeks.”
James College Chair, Laura Watson, told Vision: “We don’t really have many non-alcoholic freshers events, it’s something I’ve wanted James to do. I’m really proud of Jess Nelson who organised the event.”
On the number of people who participated, Watson added: “I’m slightly disappointed we didn’t get all of them, but the majority of them are from James and they look like they all had fun. If it was longer than three minutes, I would have been asleep!”
Alcuin’s new mascot, which goes by the name of Owlcuin, told Vision: “What York needs to remember as a university is that spooning is for fun, not about trying to beat somebody in a form of competition.”
The intact Guinness world record for spooning was set on June 4th 2010 by 529 students from Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota.
