In halls, you’ll get buzzing communal areas which you will struggle to find later on in your university life. So, bearing this in mind, what’s better than having a handy pack of cards to play with your friends?
Of course you could play the drinking games, or go for the traditional types such as Go Fish or Rummy. I preferred the latter because losing was less costly to my physical state, but I found that either were a great way to get to know my flatmates.
If want to take things more seriously, I would recommend bringing a poker set as well. There were usually a few people in my accommodation who were up for a game, and it was always a great laugh whatever happened.
During the summer months, some accommodation blocks on campus can get extremely hot and I found that was often the case at mine, Fairfax House. Many people found it was very difficult to work or sleep during such heatwaves, but the solution is very simple indeed.
A desk fan reduced my room temperature during such inhospitable times by around 5°C to a more comfortable 20°C. It meant I wasn’t constantly sweating, and my concentration during open exams, for instance, would have been much worse without it.
You can buy basic ones for around £12-£13 on the internet which will do a good job and not take up loads of space in your room. You could also purchase lots of mini ones if your room is especially large, but at least have one – you will need it.
I understand this is a pretty weird thing to bring with you to uni, but trust me, when you’ve got one you will remain committed to it for the rest of the year. OK it was a bit of a logistical nightmare to transport, but once at uni, I realised I would not have got through first year without it.
Triops are fascinating creatures and are considered living fossils. What’s more cool than having something that should be dead, which isn’t, in your room? Also, apart from the initial setting up, it doesn’t take that much time or effort to maintain. They can also be quite meditative to watch if you’re on a loose end or just fancy relaxing.
I would recommend bringing your triop tank only if your room is a suitable size; if your room is small and cramped you could risk knocking over the tank, spilling the contents all over the floor. Which would be disgusting.
