College Cup: Derwent 2nds 5-0 Alcuin 3rds

Derwent demolished a disappointing Alcuin side in a bottom-of-the-table clash on Thursday afternoon.

The match took a while to get going, with the ball becoming lost in midfield and no real quality shining through. But when Jon Garness opened the floodgates with a sublime finish; there was no way back for Alcuin, who ended their campaign on 0 points, having scored just one goal in all five games.

Garness, Derwent’s number nine, latched onto a speculative through ball on 13 minutes, turning admirably and launching an unstoppable volley past Michael Thurloway in the Alcuin goal; that being the 15th goal Alcuin conceded in the group stages.

And moments later it was the 16th, as a well-worked team move down the left wing ended with Garness latching on to a pull-back, making no mistake in slotting home his second of three this afternoon.

And his hat-trick was complete with just 20 minutes played as Garness got himself in yet another great position; this time swerving back and forth until eventually getting the ball into a striking position, letting fly an inch perfect strike with his left foot straight into the bottom corner.

Turning from ‘finisher’ into ‘provider’, Garness then won a rather debatable penalty after a sliding challenge from Erki Taube. It was left to Carbajo to do the job, and inevitably he slotted home.

At half time it looked as if the score could have been double figures; but Alcuin came out determined to end with some sort of consolation.

And their second-half performance matched that of Derwent, with the only difference being Ric Morris’ absolute scorcher nestling in the top corner.

After that goal, Alcuin shut-up-shop; something which they can only wish they did at the start of the campaign. The final score of 5-0 reflected Derwent’s dominance, but neither side will be satisfied with the final table of Group 3.

  1. Just to point out, the penalty was actually given for a sliding challenge by Erki Taube. Won the ball fairly but slide=foul.

  2. Are vision going to give a mom or not?
