York were beaten in straight sets as Lancaster added gloss to their Roses victory.

The final result is possibly a little harsh on York, who deserved at least one set from the match, but Lancaster’s superiority was clear for all to see.

The first set started well for York who opened up a 5-2 lead, thanks to the incredible slamming accuracy of Jonas Polex in particular. Sven Sabas was also impressive at blocking the Lancaster slams.

But Lancaster improved during the middle part of the set, levelling the scores at 15-15, with Fratzcak scoring some sensational points.

However, two netted serves towards the end of the first set handed Lancaster the initiative at 20-17.

York’s defensive communication faltered a little too, and Lancaster secured the first set with a score of 25-19.

Lancaster continued their good work at the start of the second set, Cannings dominating at the net to open a 6-3 lead.

Polex was still York’s main asset, and his good work as well as Harry Pampiglione’s delicate touches saw York recover to lead 7-6.

Lancaster, though behind, would not be rolled over and scored some unstoppable points to lead 19-18.

York seemed to lose heart from this and their game disappointingly tailed off again at the end of the set, as the Red Rose won 25-21 and went two sets up.

Lancaster never looked back from this point and were clearly enjoying the occasion, playing with a distinctive swagger.

They opened up a 10-3 lead in the third set with Fratczak again starring, along with Joynson, and cruised through the third set to win the match.

Afterwards, injured captain Chris Stenton said: “It was a really good match, but I’m really gutted for the team. It’s hard to take when you’re sat on the bench.”
