Vice-Chancellor Cantor to step down

University Vice-Chancellor Brian Cantor will step down from his position at the end of the 2012/13 academic year.

Cantor first took the role in 2002 and has overseen the expansion of the University at the Heslington East campus. However, he has been criticised for his expenses, as revealed by Vision in 2010, and for the University’s falling league table positions.

Chair of University Council, Chris O’Donnell told Vision: “Throughout his term, Brian has provided strong leadership to the University, and has taken great pleasure both in the development of new departments and the strengthening of existing ones.

“Academic staff and student numbers have increased significantly, and his personal involvement in the improvement of research and teaching activity has been a source of strength. On behalf of the University, I would like to thank Brian for his outstanding contribution to the University and the City of York.”

O’Donnell will shortly commence the search for Cantor’s successor.

YUSU President Tim Ellis said of Cantor’s departure: “Brian Cantor has had a highly successful ten years as Vice-Chancellor of the University of York, overseeing the University’s expansion onto Hes East, a huge increase in student numbers and York’s recent acceptance into the Russell Group of Universities.”

“We will be looking forward to working with him over the coming months and will also be eager to be a part of the process for looking for his successor to take the University forward.”
