Over the Easter holidays, the York lacrosse team travelled to Dublin to compete in the Dublinfest 2012 competition. The tournament was held between the 9th and the 13th April, right in the centre of the Irish city.
This year, with a record number of players from the club, York lacrosse didn’t fail to make a big impression both on and off the pitch. Four other university teams from across the UK competed in the three day tournament; these teams included Cardiff, Birmingham, University College Dublin and University of East Anglia.
Several players from York lacrosse men’s squad also made the trip to Dublin, but sadly, they didn’t have enough players to make a team, so they played matches for other teams instead.
The women’s 1sts had a fantastic week. In the opening stages of the competition, captains Izzi Mattick and Lydia Labram lead their side to victory as the York team beat numerous teams, such as those from Birmingham University and University College Dublin. This carried them through to the finals of the competition in which the team faced Cardiff University. The success of the women’s team throughout the preliminary stages of the competition was continued, and, while it was a tightly-fought match between the two sides, the University of York team’s outstanding performance resulted in an 8-6 victory, and York women’s lacrosse team were crowned Dublinfest 2012 winners.
Following the massive success of UYLC’s Dublin tour, the team are now preparing for the upcoming Roses tournament. Last year, York women’s lacrosse beat Lancaster by a staggering 40 -0, and with the recent win at Dublinfest, the side are undoubtedly committed to continue their winning streak!
President of UYLC, Anna Yeomans, commented that the win was “such an achievement and a great foundation for Roses.”
