Roses: volleyball preview

Men’s 1sts

In the wake of last year’s domination over Lancaster, UYVC is primed for a repeat hat-trick this year, destroying rivals Lancaster in the Men’s, Women’s, and Mixed matches.

Whilst the team make up has changed significantly, with several strong players having graduated in the last year, the team has found fresh talent in this year’s intake, notably Sven Sabas, a middle hitter with an imposing block, and Mixalis Galenianos, an opposite hitter with an eye for the attacks.

Despite suffering several setbacks in the 2011-2012 BUCS season, York currently competes in the Northern 1A, the highest league in the Northern region, whereas Lancaster competes in the Northern 2A, a league below.

An unfortunate accident over the Easter break means team captain Chris Stent will be sitting out this historic battle. But he remains undaunted, with nothing short of unwavering faith in the team, saying “I know that the boys will do me proud, and will walk onto court with the same passion and aggression that won us the fantastic victory last year. I look forward to some big performances from the lads, and can’t wait for another white wash for the White Rose!”

One player particularly looking to leave an impression is outgoing UYVC President Jonas Pollex; as a finalist, this will be his last game playing for York and he will be looking to make his exit with a big bang. Look out for powerful strikes from the left and rear of court as he sends the each ball to the ground of the opposing court at lightning speed and through the blocks, proudly proving to all that the trophy belongs with the Black & Gold.

Women’s 1sts

After an excellent run in the 2011-2012 BUCS season, UYVC’s Women’s 1st team are looking forward to meeting Lancaster on the court once again and securing the trophy for the White Rose.

Last year, the team made history when they broke Lancaster’s 9-year victory streak against York and defeated them in an intense match resulting in a 3-0 victory under the captaincy of Alexa Mitterhuber.

This year, taking the helm once again, Mitterhuber and her team are set to take the fight to Lancaster in a repeat of last year’s results, setting the record straight that the Roses trophy rightfully belongs in York.

Making her Roses debut this year, Christina Sechel has been at the top of her game all season, with her quick reflexes saving York many points from close action at the net. Keep an eye out for her quick blocks and driving kills from the backcourt.

Captain Mitterhuber, donning the Black & Gold once more in her last official match for York, is determined to make this match one that will not be forgotten any time soon. Another player worth watching, she has led York to resounding victory on many occasions with her deft spikes repeatedly slamming kills to the ground.

The team is pumped are ready to defend the White Rose once again. According to Mitterhuber, “The season has been great so far and we made it into the semi-finals of the Northern Conference Cup as well as placing 2nd in our division.” However, Lancaster has always been a very closely matched team.
