Vanbrugh waltzed to a commanding 9-1 victory against Goodricke, on a beautiful, sunny morning, to finish the season on a high.
Both teams were struggling to put out full sides, so this meant that there were great open expanses to be exploited.
Vanbrugh did just that, and with a host of university players in their ranks including Chris Baldrey, Jon Waghorne and Sam Sackville, they had too much strength for the men from Heslington East.
Waghorne scored four, but missed two others where they were easier to score, one of which would undoubtedly feature on a DVD of hockey’s worst misses.
Nevertheless he put in a commendable performance, causing havoc with his array of passing. There were two goals as well for Baldrey, whilst Sackville, Steph Cullen and Tim Alston also got their names on the scoresheet.
Goodricke pulled a late consolation back and were threatening going forward, but were constantly thwarted by the outstanding Mylo Scurr, who had great defensive assistance from Cullen and other Vanbrugh compatriots.
It was a disappointing end to the season for Goodricke, who’ll be looking to erase this performance from memory pretty quickly. On the contrary it was one of the highs of the season for Vanbrugh, who have constantly struggled to field a side.
Vanbrugh captain Mike Ward commented, “It was an excellent performance and fantastic win. Despite Waghorne’s efforts we managed to secure a comfortable victory with solid performances at the back”.
