This year a remarkable number of brilliant films have already been released, such as The Artist, The Descendants and The Muppets, but we still have a whole year of films to look forward to, so here are a few films to watch out for over the next few months.
Top Ten films to watch out for…
1) The Hunger Games
Set in post-apocalyptic America, a young girl takes the place of her sister as tribute in the Hunger Games, where tributes from each district must fight to the death with only one survivor. With films like Twilight taking over the nation it is refreshing to see a film aimed at the young, where the main problem isn’t which is preferable: necrophilia or bestiality.
2) Brave
A film full of Scottish accents, Scottish humour, and a one legged Scottish king; another Pixar film which doesn’t take a traditional approach to story lines, and with the Princess being a young girl looking for freedom rather than her knight in shining armour, it looks to be a hit.

3) Prometheus
After 25 years Ridley Scott returns to the Sci-Fi genre with Prometheus; a film about a team that goes on an exploration to discover the origins of man-kind, but ends up nearly destroying the human race.
4) Monsieur Lazhar
Set in Canada, after a elementary teacher suddenly dies, an Algerian immigrant is hired to replace him and ends up having a positive effect on his pupils; a film that appears to fill the gap left by The Chorus.
5) Snow White and the Huntsman
The last few years have brought many film adaptations of classic childhood fairy-tales, such as the unfortunate Red Riding Hood, and with the new Mirror, Mirror, starring Julia Roberts, coming out, it appears that all fairy-tale films are going to remain aimed at the Twilight Tweens. However, Snow White and the Huntsman appears to take a refreshing angle on the classic Red Riding Hood story, even if its main lead is ironically Kristen Stewart.
6) Jeff, Who Lives At Home
Slacker Jeff is trying to figure out his destiny from his Mum’s basement, and after spending the day with his brother, who is trying to track down his adulterous wife, he may finally have discovered it. With actors such as Jason Segal, Susan Sarandon and Ed Helms starring, this film looks to bring us the same quality humour as The Hangover.

7) Chronicle
When three friends gain superpowers they find themselves questioning each other’s motives, as they use them for increasingly darker With films such as The Avengers and The Amazing Spiderman being released this year, Chronicle has put a different spin on the idea of people gaining superpowers, allowing us to look at the darker side, where the threat is yourself.

8) Men In Black 3
Another film from the beloved series which will hopefully not fail to disappoint MIB fans: when Agent K is assassinated by an alien, Agent J travels back in time to the 1960s to try and stop his friend being assassinated and history being changed.
9) The Lorax
From the people that brought you Despicable Me comes, another CGI masterpiece, attempting to show how nature will always be an integral part of our world, even after destruction.
10) Salmon Fishing in the Yemen
When the idea of Salmon Fishing in Yemen is brought forward, a group of eclectic figures come together to try and make it happen, with life changing consequences. Written by Simon Beaufoy who wrote Slumdog Millionaire, comes what appears to be another feel good charmer.
I notice a distinct lack of The Avengers, The Hobbit or The Dark Knight Rises. Those are probably the three most anticipated films of 2012 – how have they not made your list?
Don’t worry, haven’t forgotten them. These are the films coming out over the next 2 or 3 months. The Hobbit, Dark Knight Rises and Avengers will be mentioned in the next few blogs.
Brave comes out in August, The Avengers comes out in April!
Still, as a person with an unhealthy obsession with films, I appreciate your idea. 2012 looks like it’s going to be an awesome year for film – 2011 was sub-par.
Just a minor correction: Illumination Entertainment did Despicable Me, not How to Train Your Dragon (that was Dreamworks).
The Lorax details have been amended – thanks for letting us know V.
