Emma Hersey
Second year psychology student Emma is in the University of York Concert Band, a member of DanceSoc and has been on the James College JCRC for the past two years as their Access and Disabilities Rep. She wants to make a difference by pushing disabled students to the forefront of peoples awareness as she does not believe that they have enough of a voice at York.
Her biggest ambition as Disabled Students’ Officer would be to increase the amount of people getting involved with the Disabled Student’s Network. If elected she plans to hold Disabled Student Network meetings every week, send out surveys as well as hold focus groups with disabled students about Disability Services and ensure all campus-wide events are accessible to all. She wants people to remember that disabled students are there and need to be considered
Madelaine Kirkman
Madelaine Kirkman wants to make a difference by recognising that disability issues cannot simply be tacked on to other strategies but must be considered along the way, for example the wheelchair access to latest YUSU event.
If elected she wants to improve points of contact for freshers with disabilities to make the transition to university less stressful, increased lighting and navigation tools around campus to help partially sighted and mobility impaired students and improve opportunities for disabled students’ concerns to be raised and make the communication of these to the wider student and staff body more effective.
