Derwent College JCRC election results announced

Knight celebrates her victory alongside runner-up Newcomb Photo: Oliver Todd

Francesca Knight has been announced as the first elected JCRC Chair of the 2011/12 academic year. With Derwent College announcing their election results before anyone else at Derwent Bar this evening, Knight beat off competition from Harry Pampiglione, Harry Dorrance-King, Flavio Newcomb and Edward Scwitzer to be elected as chair.

Current Derwent Chair Matt Jenkins told Vision earlier this week that “this will probably be the closest elections we’ve had in Derwent for many years,” and so it proved when Knight beat Newcomb to first place by just 23 votes.

Beth Finnie and Lucy Hoban were elected as Vice-Chairs, seeing off competition from Louis Glassar and Lorin Bell-Cross.

On a well attended night, the closest run and one of the most contested votes was for Welfare Rep. Current Chair Matt Jenkins attempted to ramp up the tension with an “after this break”  cliffhanger while announcing the new officers, and the position was eventually filled by Katy Tinman and Ben Clynes by a margin of just 18 votes over Andy Pickard and Kitty Tester.

On winning, Knight told Vision: “I feel so happy that so many people voted for me. I had no idea what the result would be, there were so many really good candidates. I’m shocked and more shocked, but just happy that it’s me and so happy that people have recognised how much I love Derwent and that I will hopefully do a really good job as Chair. I’m just so overwhelmed. My Dad’s going to be so proud!”
