An Acquired Taste?

CONTROVERSY AND DIVISION surrounds the newly elected James College JCRC’s decision to hold a ‘Bad Taste’ themed event in Week 4.

The new committee are desperate to compete with colleges like Derwent and Vanbrugh whose events typically attract more students and make a larger profit.

Nonetheless there is concern from Robert Hughes, Welfare Vice-Chair, that the event could “alienate the college and make them seem unapproachable to those in need.”

Tim Green, Chair, was also worried about potential bad publicity from the event.

A vote at the last committee resulted 15-8 in favour of having the event with guidelines against an alternative idea. This will surely disappoint Hughes who, only three days before the committee meeting, told Vision : “Bad Taste was one of those ideas thrown around that wasn’t taken seriously and was just part of people putting some ideas out there to discuss”.

In the JCRC minutes obtained by Vision, it is stated that guidelines will be set out so that the college will not be responsible if anything was to go wrong, including a contentious measure to have Ents Reps at the door to stop people entering with outfits they deem as ‘overly offensive’.

Vision understands many members of the JCRC are disappointed with the guidelines as they ‘defeat the point of a Bad Taste party’.

It is unclear whether James College will be offering ticket refunds to students who have been turned away.

  1. Hi, did anyone think whilst writing this about the students who were looking forward to an event titled ‘Bad Taste’ who evisonged bad tracksuits and bad fashion in general. Most students are horrible people waiting for an excuse to offend people, we James students just want a big event with loads of people and lots of people and i comment James JCRC for coming up with an event that people are excited about and actually is worth spending the money on.

And by the way, is anybody complaining about PORNO V cos in my eyes that is offensive whatever way you look at it, where as this is offensive if the minority take it the wrong way.

  2. People complain every year about PORNO V for no other reason than they think they should. It is a tradition among uni’s to host safe sex events (which PORNO is) whilst alowing people to flaunt their sexuality. Exeter has a safe sex ball which people queue for 8 hours to buy tickets for. The only difference is the name. Bad Taste on the other hand serves no wider purpose than to make gasp and snigger. It is best left to the world of the houseparty.

  3. If you don’t like bad taste don;t go then. The minority always have to spoil a good natured event.
