Derwent produced flashes of brilliance to overcome a Wentworth side that are far from the finished article.
It was Derwent who were quickest out of the blocks. A Matt O’Connor effort was saved by Wentworth keeper John Cook and a Harry Bradshaw header whistled just past the post.
However, Wentworth soon had a very good chance themselves with Dom Green striking wide after receiving the ball from Andrea Marcheggiano.
A few minutes later, Derwent opened the scoring courtesy of Sam Earle. A corner was only partially cleared to the edge of the box where Earle was waiting to drive the ball through a crowd of bodies on the half-volley.
Derwent extended their lead not long after. O’Connor cut inside and produced a scintillating ball to Atherton. He was able to set up Bradshaw who calmly slotted the ball into the top left corner.
They should have made it three when Cook could only parry a Tapper effort which bounced wickedly in front of him. Yet, Bradshaw put the ball wide from less than six yards out.
Wentworth had a good opportunity to respond at the end of the half. Marcheggiano played in Lackie Murray but he could only strike the ball straight at the oncoming Seb Treasure.
After some intense pressure early in the second half, Derwent did make it 3-0. A Joe Boughtflower throw-in was received by Bradshaw who set up Alex D’Albertanson. He made no mistake finishing low to Cook’s right.
Wentworth’s best chance of the half fell to Green who headed wide from a Rich Rhodes free-kick.
Derwent made it 4-0 late on after Cook was unable to hold an Atherton shot which span over his shoulder and into the net.
Derwent Captain Joe Boughtflower commented post match that it was not his side’s greatest performance but the result was more important. Rich Rhodes, the Wentworth Captain, believed his side improved in the second half after a disappointing start.
