York dominated the game from the early stages, and Katy Ballantyne opened the scoring for her side, before her deflected effort almost doubled York’s advantage shortly afterwards.

York continued to press and got their reward when Jess Atkinson finished well into the bottom corner making it 2-0 at half time.

Bethan Pugh battled well in the centre and Megan Phillips made some impressive saves when called upon in the York goal, denying the red rose two excellent chances to make it 2-1, but it was York who were to score next, Ballantyne adding to her opener with a classy finish.

Lancaster tried to force a comeback, slotting home their first and then being gifted their second after a rare goalkeeping error, and it looked as if York’s dominance was starting to fade. The Lancastrians missed an excellent chance to equalise before Ballantyne completed her hat-trick and made it 4-2 though.

The pressure was well and truly lifted a few minutes later; Ballantyne scored again and Gaby Stewart added a sixth before Lancaster slotted in a last minute penalty. It was a mere consolation however, and York celebrated an ultimately comfortable 6-3 victory. A result that will surely give our girls confidence going into Sunday’s all important outdoor contest.
