Thieves target gardens and sheds in Fishergate crime surge

A surge in crime last night has led to police warning residents of the Fishergate area to keep safe.

Four incidents were reported to police, including a shed burglary and cycle theft, both on Wellington Street. Two attempted break-ins in Alma Terrace and Gordon Street, all within a mile of the University, were also reported.

The Fishergate Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team sent an advisory to residents, warning them that offenders “are climbing over walls or going through back gates to access rear gardens.”

It went on to tell residents to “ensure your gate and shed is locked with a good quality lock. If your shed has windows please block the windows up so persons cannot see inside.”

It is unclear whether the victims were students or locals. Police have appealed for information, asking that anybody seen acting suspiciously is reported to police.

Jamie Arden of Wellington Street expressed his concern, saying that he “didn’t feel safe – especially as I have the back room of the house closest the shed!”

In November, Vision reported on the surge of burglaries in residential areas popular with students, particularly around Fishergate. One Writing, Directing and Performance student even had items stolen from her room whilst she was sleeping. The Safer York Partnership also announced in January that they expected a rise in bicycle theft by 45% this year.

YUSU Welfare Officer Laura Borisovaite echoed the advice of the police, as well as advising students to not “make opportunities for thieves.” She noted that bike locks were available from Costcutter on campus.

North Yorkshire Police were unavailable for comment.
