Returning Officer for the YUSU Elections, Dan Walker, has stepped down from the role for reasons as yet unknown to Vision.
An email sent out on Saturday to all election candidates explained that Tim Ngwena, in his role as President, would take up the position in the mean time.
Last year, Returning Officer Lewis Bretts was also forced to step down, due then to health reasons. He returned in time for the results night, which he hosted. It is understood that Walker will continue as D&S Officer once he returns to work.
As with 2010’s elections cycle, NUS representatives conducted the Hustings for the YUSU elections last Thursday.
In other news, Presidential candidate and Union Council Chair Charlie Rowley faced technical issues in his nomination application, soemthing which almost resulted in his inability to run. Speaking on URY’s Candidate Interview Night on Saturday, he explained that he submitted his form, “but it was close to the deadline – a clear 15 minutes before – and that was it as far as I was concerned.
“It was only by chance that day that everyone had had a candidate meeting and I wasn’t included and I acted on it right away. It was a shame that it was a Friday and it took two days until Monday but it was a technical fault.”
Rowley is running against ex-Halifax JCRC Chair Lydia Blundell, ex-Goodricke JCRC Chair Tim Ellis, and ex-James College Sports Officer Aaron Rolph.
Additionally, LGBT is now an uncontested position, with Emma Brownbill running alone. Candidates Henna Ishaq and Liam O’Shaughnessy stepped down from the race shortly before Hustings for reasons not yet disclosed.
Voting opens on Friday, and results will be announced Thursday Week 8 at an event in The Courtyard. Full details of all election candidates can be found in Vision’s Elections Supplement, in the centre of this issue.
