Halifax spent the vast majority of the first half in the Wentworth quarter. Despite this the first half closed with the score at 0-0. This is not to say Halifax didn’t have their chances, despite repeated attempts at goal good defending from Wentworth and especially good ‘keeping from captain Jon Cooke meant they just couldn’t find the net.
Cooke seemed unbeatable, one particular save must have left his hands stinging as the shot by Mundy powered towards the goal with frightening force. He saved another at full dive, must to the frustration of the ‘Fax supporters.
Wentworth’s chances were few and far between; they had two decent attempts at goal but both came to nothing.
It was different news in the second half. Halifax came back on the pitch looking more controlled as they dominated the early possession. After David Lewis missed an easy chance on the post, Halifax got their long awaited goal. A penalty was given after a Halifax player was tripped up in the area. Jake Mundy stepped up to take it and didn’t disappoint, coolly putting it away to make the score 1-0.
Mundy got his second soon afterwards after some sloppy goalline chances for ‘Fax which came to nought. Darling took a corner and arched it beautifully into Mundy who headed it in.
After this Halifax seemed to find a new wind. They benefitted from sub Craig Dean who came on for Meckin and made a big difference to the attack, creating chances on goal. Moyle scored from an assist from Matt Darling, he casually slotted the ball in and the score stood at 3-0.
Wentworth had a few opportunities up the pitch, Dan’s huge clearances from the back sent the Halifax defence back pedalling. Beacham capitalised from these and proved rapid, moving between the defence but couldn’t convert.
Halifax finished the game with two more goals from Moyle closely followed by Mundy who showed poise at the top of the area, beating the defender to pass the goal under ‘keeper Cooke seconds before the final whistle blew.
The ref seemed to be missing quite a few handballs, especially according to the crowd. This shouldn’t, however, detract from either team’s performance.
Halifax captain Dean Hanson was understanably happy with his team (and a bit keen to get out of the rain) he commented that there was ‘great play from everyone today’ and that to get ‘five goals in half an hour’ was a great achievement down to not ‘taking our foot of the gas’.
“Beacham proved rapid”… awful shout, he couldn’t have beaten one fax player for pace. and “Dan’s huge clearances” barely made the halfway line and were all toe punts going off for throws.
